Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can influence how clean your chimney stays over time.

Types of Firewood

Not all firewood burns the same. Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory are denser, produce more heat, and burn cleaner than softwoods. They also contain less sap and moisture, which means less creosote build-up in your chimney.

Avoid using green or unseasoned wood, which contains a lot of moisture and contributes to more smoke and creosote accumulation. Properly seasoned wood is visibly dry, has cracks in the ends, and sounds hollow when knocked together.

Seasoning Firewood

To season firewood properly, cut the wood into pieces and store it covered but with good air circulation for at least six months. This drying process reduces the wood’s moisture content, making it more efficient for burning.

Wood should be stacked off the ground and protected from rain with a cover that allows air to circulate. Properly seasoned wood is key to reducing the amount of residue left in your chimney, which minimizes the need for frequent cleanings.

Using Firewood Efficiently

To make the most of your firewood, allow small fires to burn hotter rather than smoldering for long periods. This approach reduces creosote production and builds less residue in the flue.

Combining well-seasoned hardwood with efficient burning practices not only improves heat efficiency but also helps keep your chimney cleaner, ensuring safer operation of your fireplace or wood stove.
